Argentina Prohibits Gender Treatments for Minors

The Government of Argentina has decided to amend the Gender Identity law, prohibiting hormone treatments and adaptations for those under 18 years of age. The measure was communicated by presidential spokesperson Manuel Adorni, aiming to establish new regulations regarding gender identity in the country.

This decision has generated various reactions in society, especially among organizations advocating for the rights of trans people and the health of minors.

In a statement issued by the Office of the President, it was reported that President Javier Milei has banned treatments and surgeries for gender change in minors. According to the statement, the application of gender ideology to children by force or psychological coercion constitutes child abuse, as children do not possess the necessary cognitive maturity to make decisions about irreversible processes.

Furthermore, it is mentioned that pioneering countries in child gender change have rolled back these regulations, highlighting that the President of Argentina will also decree that the housing of incarcerated individuals will be determined according to the sex registered at the time of the criminal act.

It is established that no man who has requested the rectification of his gender before committing a crime can be housed in women’s prisons if he has been convicted of sexual offenses, human trafficking, or violent crimes against women, even if the prison evaluation determines it.

The Government argues that these measures aim to end privileges and promote equality before the law, putting an end to child abuse related to gender identity and preventing situations of opportunism by criminals.
